Chatfield Brass Band and Library inducted into the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame
The Minnesota Music Hall of Fame, based in New Ulm, Minnesota, is pleased to announce that the Chatfield Brass Band and Music Lending Library has been selected as one of seven inductees into the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame for 2026. The awards were presented at the Banquet and Induction Ceremony on April 10, 2026, at Turner Hall in New Ulm. The evening celebrates each inductee’s history through video presentations and music. Since its founding in 1989, the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame has bestowed this prestigious honor on 223 individuals and organizations.
The Chatfield Brass (and Woodwind) Band was organized in 1969 by Chatfield attorney Jim Perkins. In 1973, the band was incorporated, achieved tax‑exempt status, and began welcoming women musicians into its ranks. Today, the band, directed by Carmen Narveson, includes approximately forty members from throughout southeastern Minnesota and northern Iowa and maintains an active rehearsal and performance schedule year‑round. During June and July, the band sponsors the popular Music in the Park summer concert series, in addition to performing annual concerts at the Chosen Valley Care Center—a tradition now marking 50 years—and at Pilot Mound Lutheran Church. The band also presents a Christmas concert and performs in parades and community events across southeastern Minnesota.
The Chatfield Music Lending Library was built and dedicated in 1981, with Dr. William Revelli presiding over the dedication. The library is the brainchild of Jim Perkins and is the only one of its kind in the world. Its mission is to preserve band music and continue the legacy of its performance. To date, the library has collected and cataloged more than 50,000 pieces of music, many of which are no longer in print. The library receives music requests from bands throughout the United States and around the world. Jerel Nielsen, the library’s manager, has led ongoing efforts to update the library building and streamline its computerized catalog and lending systems. As a nonprofit organization, it is funded solely through memberships, service fees, and donations.
The continued success of the band and the library reflect the dedication of past and present board members, library managers, staff, volunteers, band members, and directors. We extend our sincere appreciation to the City of Chatfield, the Chatfield community, and the many supporters and audience members whose enthusiasm and ongoing contributions strengthen our programming and enhance the quality of life in Chatfield.
